"You are reacting normally to an abnormal situation. I'd be more concerned if you weren't reacting this way."

Survivor and Practitioner delivered professional training in Child Sexual Abuse

Yellow underline

Side By Side CSA (Mental Health) is a survivor-designed programme delivered with Survivor Sophie, and Trauma Informed Counsellor, Jasmine. The powerful tool of storytelling is used to illustrate the child’s experience leading into the survivor’s journey, and the social harms faced in a system that frequently overlooks or pathologises the needs of child sexual abuse survivors. Sophie and Jasmine explore barriers to trauma-responsive Mental Health support, and consider how practitioners can support the needs of the survivor with non-pathologising compassion, empathy and courage.

It is our belief that all Practitioners working within Mental Health and therapeutic and support settings should have lived-experience led training on how to better identify, respond to and support child and adult victims and survivors of child sexual abuse. Practitioners can feel understandably anxious or misinformed about supporting the needs of a survivor, or how to approach a conversation about Child Sexual Abuse. This training brings policies to life and instils confidence, allowing them to use their professional skills and judgement effectively and humanely.

Wellbeing support and clear signposting for delegates is provided throughout sessions, with the recognition the subject might be challenging for those supporting victims and survivors, or managing their own trauma. Our approach is human-centred, kind and trauma responsive.

Side By Side CSA is committed to evidence-based practices that align with current legislation. We direct to the latest resources from CSA Centre of Expertise, NSPCC, and The Independent Inquiry Into Child Sexual Abuse (IICSA).

Self-Exploration:

Professional discomfort can significantly impede effective support for victims and survivors of childhood sexual abuse (CSA). We gently invite you to recognise, reflect on and address individual comfort levels - crucial for creating a compassionate, supportive environment.

Skills Development:

You will develop comprehensive skills to understand and support survivors of sexual abuse, focusing on identifying and overcoming barriers to trauma-responsive practice through enhanced relational and empathetic approaches.

Discover the power of authentic and courageous relational skills fueled by professional curiosity. You will gain a deep understanding of how trauma extends beyond childhood, leaving you equipped with valuable insights for personal and professional growth.

Delivery:

Lived -experience training in-person is most impactful, as it breaks down personal and professional barriers in a unique way (costs dependent on location, hours and number of participants)

Our training courses can be adapted to different settings and group sizes.

Beyond Labels -
Creating Narratives with Survivors of Trauma

With Sophie Olson and Lucy Johnstone

PTMF Festival workshop image Lucy and Sophie

In this interactive workshop, CSA survivor Sophie Olson will share her own story as an example, and Lucy Johnstone will guide participants to reflect on how it might have been framed in terms of the PTM Framework when she first came into contact with services. Together, the attenders and presenters will discuss the differences between this and standard psychiatric approaches, and the contribution that it might make towards enabling everyone to choose the best path to healing.

This workshop introduces a new approach, the Power Threat Meaning Framework, which is becoming influential within and beyond services. It is a co-produced project which draws on trauma-informed ideas in order to support the construction of narratives as an alternative to diagnostic labels. The PTMF can help to explain how and why distress arises in the contexts of life events and the sense people make of them. In this way, trauma survivors can be supported to create more hopeful narratives about their difficulties, instead of seeing themselves as blameworthy, weak, or mentally ill. The Framework also shows why those of us without an obvious history of trauma or adversity can still struggle to find a sense of self-worth, meaning and identity.
