Side By Side CSA (Healthcare) is a survivor-designed programme delivered with Survivor Sophie Olson, and GP, Dr Jonathon Tomlinson. Using Sophie's story to illustrate the potential for harm when a healthcare system overlooks or misunderstands the needs of child sexual abuse survivors, Sophie and Jonathon explore barriers to trauma-informed care and how practitioners can support the needs of the survivor with non-pathologising compassion, empathy and courage.

Practitioners can feel understandably anxious or misinformed about the possibility of child sexual abuse, or how to approach a conversation about non-recent abuse. This training instils confidence, allowing them to use their professional skills and judgement effectively in a complex and challenging area.

Wellbeing support and clear signposting for delegates is provided throughout sessions, with the recognition that many people are personally affected either directly, or indirectly, by child sexual abuse.. Our approach is human-centred, non-blaming and 'unshaming'.

Skills Development

This survivor and paractitioner led training explores how child sexual abuse can affect a survivor's experience of accessing healthcare. Using lived experience, reflection, and practical discussion, the training supports participants to develop sensitive, trauma informed practice.

Participants develop a deeper understanding of how child sexual abuse can impact adult life, helping them to better understand trauma responses, as well as the role of stigma and shame in doctor/patient interaction.

Participants explore how professional responses can help or harm survivor wellbeing. The training focuses on reducing assumptions, increasing curiosity, and embedding compassionate, person-centred approaches into everyday practice.

Costs dependent on location, hours and number of participants.

Our training courses can be adapted to different settings and group sizes. In-person (preferable). Online option available.

From the session, my key takeaway was the realisation that the emotional responses I experience as a GP when working with patients affected by trauma are shared by my colleagues. This has helped me feel less isolated. I also gained a deeper understanding that trauma is highly individualised - no two patients experience or express it in the same way. Going forward, I will be more mindful of this individuality, continue to approach such interactions with empathy, and reinforce the importance of continuity of care, which plays a crucial role in building trust and supporting recovery.
